By the time you receive this, we will have officially occupied our new space. It’s been a long time coming having overcome the many obstacles a broken world has thrown at us including obstinate neighbors, a challenging municipality and mountains of paperwork required by the City, State and Federal governing agencies to become a recognized church in this day and age.
With that, we are celebrating our new location, having finally moved out of Nick and Jessica’s home and spending the last two months furnishing the interior with a stage, sound booth and soundproofing. We’d like to especially thank two members from our church back home for their many hours of consultation and helping us tackle the various aspects of lighting, sound and staging.
We’re also celebrating the addition of a few new people to our little flock since we’ve moved in - which is a lot to celebrate in the Northwest where the soil is as hard as concrete. One of our recent visitors told us she has been praying for two years for a church to move into the space we now occupy. Encouragements like that keep us motivated in an area that literally boasts of having more non-religion affiliated people than those who have some religious affiliation.
On a personal note, this past Spring, Nick was hired as a part-time Bible teacher at a local Christian High School when the current teacher left for missionary service. He was asked back this Fall and will continue to teach part-time. He and Jessica also added little Riah to their growing family this fall. She becomes the new playmate to her brother Zion, 4, and Olive, 2.
Presently, the three of them make up the entirety of our Children’s Church but we’re hoping to grow our Children’s ministry – and our church – as we reach into our community this Christmas season. Both our Men’s and Women’s Bible Study Groups continue to flourish. They meet Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings respectively. And, both groups have been instrumental in the spiritual growth and maturity of our group.
Finally, we continue to look for more opportunities to reach into our City. There is a great physical need. According to a recent study by the Urban Institute in Washington D.C., half of Southwest Washington residents don’t have enough money to afford basic necessities like housing and food. Because of this, we’ve established our first two ministries to help confront this issue: Harvest & Hope, our food allocation ministry and our Financial Counseling Ministry to teach the Biblical principles of faithfully using the provisions and resources God has entrusted to us.
Finally, we wish to thank all of you for your continued prayers and financial support. We could not have been rooted in this community without you. The ground is slowly being tilled and a few tiny seeds are taking root. Please continue to pray that more seeds would be planted in this hard soil and that those few that have begun to grow would grow deep and secure in the love of Christ. And one day, as we all stand before our Lord and Savior, you will meet those brothers and sisters whose lives have been transformed through the investments you’ve help make here on earth.
God Bless,
Nick, Jessica, Zion, Olive, Riah, Dale and Stephanie Turner
